Betsy DeVos Talks Education Choice and How Faith Is the ‘Basis for All She Does’

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos addressed Christian media and ministry professionals on Feb. 26 during the NRB 2020 Christian Media Convention in Nashville, Tenn.

The secretary praised President Trump for recently signing an executive order, “basically clarifying and restating what we all know to be the case under the First Amendment — that we should be able to freely express our faith” in public schools.

The First Amendment is for all people of all creeds and faiths. It’s the bedrock of our nation. The First Amendment illustrates the Founders’ belief that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos answers questions about religious freedom in education at the 2020 National Religious Broadcasters convention in Nashville, Tenn.

Too many school districts and even states “have not allowed for that free expression of students, whether it be to pray before lunch or to have a club with some of their fellow students after school,” DeVos said.

“The theme of freedom was woven throughout Secretary DeVos’ remarks at our national convention,” explained Janet Parshall, Chairman of the Board for NRB, the association that annually hosts the NRB Convention, according to a press release.

“She reminded us how this Administration is working diligently to ensure freedom for parents through scholarship dollars as well as the diligent efforts being made to enhance school choice by eliminating arcane legislation that discriminates against faith-based schools,” Parshall continued. “But most encouraging of all was to hear the Secretary share how ‘her faith is the basis for all she does.’”

DeVos released a statement following Trump’s 2020 State of the Union Address, urging Congress to heed the president’s call to pass the Administration’s Education Freedom Scholarships proposal.

“Education freedom is inevitable. We know it works for students, and we know overwhelming majorities of Americans want it. I’m grateful to the President for his strong support of this proposal from day one and look forward to Congress acting quickly on this bipartisan issue and putting students’ needs above everything else.”
