ADDRESSING THE ISSUES
Alveda King has joined other leading voices to compile the book, Black and Brown Americans in Search of the American Dream: A 21st Century Treatise. The release coincides with the 56th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech. People like Bishop Harry Jackson, Rev. William Hoye III, Rev. Dean Nelson, and several others contributed. Alveda explains, “The purpose of writing this report is to create a permanent record of concerns impacting Africans in the 21st Century.” Within its pages, you will find topics such as abortion, eugenics, reparations, racism, criminal justice, and religious freedom covered.
As a key figure in not only addressing these issues, Alveda is also providing strategic solutions towards healing and restoration. She believes that in order to bring healing you must first know your history to identify the root issues at hand. “If we discuss reparations without discussing history, there will never be healing because the root cause of evil will not have been identified and redeemed. Slavery itself is evil. Evil begets evil. In America, slavery and racism were followed by Jim Crow laws, segregation, lynching, and more racism. Subsequent solutions such as a crippling welfare system were bandages on wounds that still need to be healed today,” she explains.
She also focuses on the evils of abortion and calls for the same civil rights for the unborn identifying Margaret Sanger and the eugenics movement at the root of it all. Alveda explains, “Every human being must be afforded life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, from conception until natural death,” she continues, “This state of human-being includes family stability, good education, gainful financial security, good health, freedom to worship God, and freedom to respect the human estate of every person…This is the true meaning of human rights and human dignity.”
Alveda is a pastor, leader, author, and speaker with a rich cultural heritage. Her uncle is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Alveda is a guardian of the King Family Legacy; she oversees that the truths that have made the King family influential and prosperous are protected and continue to be shared. She highlights the King’s core value of fighting for justice because it is the very essence of who they are. Fighting injustice started with Alveda’s grandfather who lobbied hard for black privileges while pastoring at their church. Alveda’s father promoted credit unions for his church members and encouraged people to further their education during the civil rights movement.
Alveda King Ministries works to advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She works hard in fighting for the unborn and the stability and foundation of the traditional family while promoting values and morals. She also offers tangible resources for families in need so they can live prosperously to their full potential. She explains, “We aim to educate through community events, mentoring programs, media campaigns scholarship awards, coalition-building Christian advocacy groups and other means of positive reinforcement in order to lead people to Christ in expectancy of life, family, hope and ‘agape love’ in the global community.”
